Studying in the United States means entering on an F-1 student visa and maintaining your status from the moment you arrive until graduation. You must study full-time, keep your I-20 and SEVIS record updated, and hold a valid entry visa if you travel abroad and return. Your visa may expire while you remain legally in the U.S., but you’ll need a new visa stamp if you leave and re-enter.

Working during your degree (CPT + on-campus work)

You can work on campus during term time, and you may take part in internships through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) if your degree programme includes practical training. Work must be authorised before you begin — unauthorised work risks your status.

Working after graduation (OPT + STEM OPT)

Most students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months of work in a role related to their degree. If your degree is STEM-designated and your employer meets the requirements, you may be eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to 36 months of post-study work in total.

Employer responsibilities during STEM OPT

STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify and to provide structured, supervised training documented in Form I-983. Your work must be paid, full-time, and directly related to your studies.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

However, you may need to achieve a higher score should you apply for a Ph.D.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS )

IELTS academic test results are recognised by over 4000 US universities and colleges, with writing, listening, reading and speaking making up the four sections of the exam, testing the applicant’s fluency in English. - Depending on the courses and universities, the minimum requirements in the US for the IELTS exam range from the 6 to 7+ band. Post-graduate course minimum requirements might be slightly stricter, depending on the particular school or college.

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a purely online test which assesses the skill level of second language English speakers wanting to apply for university and colleges in the US. - Over 785 US colleges and institutes recognise the qualification and it’s gaining popularity due to the simple registration and exam structure as well as the quick turnaround in test results - they are typically ready within 48 hours.
